Nedlands Gets a Healthy Boost
Congratulations Nedlands Yacht Club! NYC has been awarded a Healthy Clubs grant sponsored by Sports Medicine Western Australia and Healthway.
As a Healthy Club, NYC encourages our members to use our sport and our club-community to address safety and health issues. As a club we are very conscientious of water safety, sun safety and the consistent availability and use of safety equipment.
NYC’s grant efforts started last season with Mike Dean, Rob Loughman and Shauna McGee Kinney. Mike and Rob helped analyze safety needs for volunteers, sailing students and members. The team looked at the most used and most needed safety items. Shauna handled the application procedures in conjunction with Wendy Collins.
In November, our club was able to fulfill several needs. Our safety boat operators now have comfortable, inflatable PFDs that they can wear while on duty. Our tower has a new set of binoculars. Our learn to sail program has eight new life jackets in a good variety of sizes to cover our youth and adult students. NYC has stocked up on sunscreen and our club grant funded the First Aid training of our members this month.
Special thanks go to Mike Fitzgerald, Regatta Committee Chair, and Chloe for identifying the PFDs that would be most comfortable and most likely to be used by the volunteers and students. Gratitude to Jim Marriot, our NYC Safety Officer. Jim was able to provide a generous discount through Whitworths to help our club maximize and extend our grant funds. Jim also shared his knowledge of various product options and the features most likely to make the new safety equipment useful.
What you can do?
Every member at NYC is involved in safety. Please help our sailing community by returning PFDs or other equipment marked or belonging to NYC to our Officer of the Day or our front office. Our members, volunteers and sailing students should always have safety equipment available to them.
Take a first aid class through Nedlands Yacht Club, which NYC has been offering regularly each season to members and the public. Provide assistance when there is an injury or contact any of our club leaders or fellow members if someone needs first aid. Let our Officer of the Day, Safety Officer, Commodore or Regatta Chair know of any ideas you have for improving safety at our club.
