To Darwin and Beyond!

Tornado National Championship – Darwin, Australia

Nedlands Yacht Club and the Western Australian International Tornado Association (WAITA) will see 7 boats compete in Australian Tornado Nationals in Darwin.

In mid-June, WAITA packed and sent their container of boats to Darwin and the event will be held from 4 July to 11 July at Fannie Bay Sailing Club.  Darwin always presents sailors with challenging conditions involving fast tidal flows and much varied wind strengths.

Organisers expect 18-20 Tornados at the event, including 3 teams from Melbourne and 7 local teams from Darwin.

In March, the organizers announced Kim Peaker from Perth as the MRO for the event. The Flag Officer from Nedlands Yacht Club (Perth, Australia), Julia Cheong will join Kim in officiating the races. Both Kim and Julia participated in the race committee for the 2007 Tornado Nationals at Nedlands Yacht Club.

Tornado World Championship – Lake Garda, Italy

Two of our top teams will be progressing on from the Darwin National Championships to Tornado World Championships in Italy. The Tornado Worlds will be held from 28 August to 4 September at Lake Garda. WAITA will be represented by Brett Burvill (skipper) / Ryan Duffield (crew); and Jared Eyles (skipper) / Billy Leonard (crew).

The Worlds organizers are hoping for up to 80 boats, and many expect 50-60 teams competing on the water. The Tornado class may see some new names in the top positions, due to the likelihood that some of the top Olympic sailors may take the year off or have moved to other Olympic sailing classes. Our sailors are looking forward to the changing field of teams and a chance to place in the top of the fleet.

After 5 days of racing 2 heats a day, our NYC / WAITA teams are looking forward to the “Centromiglia”, a sailing tour of Lake Garda covering about 100 miles / 161 km. While it’s a grueling race, Brett, Ryan, Jared and Billy look forward to a nice “cool down” to a very athletic championship.
